When We Were Young

When We Were Young
When We Were Young

Blue days red with angst,
sun the warmth of hearts in question,
and moods sway like willow fronds,
amid the cautious winds of nature’s play,
and youth I can recall,
the tears of hearts well broken,
soaked with mawkish hormone rush,
and delicate, fragile lips misspoken.

Golden days triumphed,
beach and sand and sunburn stings,
hearts light, in love with everything,
and vibrant were those endless skies,
hiding night and moons to rise,
as kisses like flighted butterflies,
stirred hearts so young and eager,
led up garden paths that tricked us.

Yet who can forget each moment,
the surging wants and deep despairs of loss,
honed we were in tragic chaos,
but lived to tell the tale,
learned to recognize those veils of audacity,
that dragged us happily to our unfolding,
and after pain of lessons learned, sagacity,
and a brewing, subtle perspective.

Green the grasses so rich,
that burdened the weight of love’s embrace,
on spring days that melded with each shallow breath,
when depth was forged by lips
and wordless caress,
on days that immortalized our hopes,
for life and all its scope,
when we were young.
