True to His Art the Poet Speaks

The eye of the beholder sees,
if within the realm of understanding,
the poets purpose, his heart rendered,
and that is not the poet’s curse,
rather the ability of the reader to understand the verse,
relate and take that beauty proffered to heart,
that alone upholds beauty’s echo,
to understand what beauty is,
through another’s eyes.
Art is always subjective,
and just who finds glory in its expression,
are those with minds to see through the artist’s eyes,
otherwise a masterpiece is but an object,
words just ink and thoughts a dream undreamed;
for understanding the nuance of expression
is uniquely individual,
and the more tuned the art, the less people acknowledge its reality,
for the eyes of the beholder may be wanting.
A poet may understand acclaim,
know what is revered and rejected,
but in truth to self, no expression can be change,
just for the adoration of a reader,
for that is an art disrespected;
the vision of any artist must be pure,
for that is art, expression its own reward,
not shackles or fame to taint the flow
when true to his art the poet speaks.

Very well expressed, Tony. Poets have to stay true to themselves first. If they only write to please an audience or gain accolades the work will lack heart and authenticity.
Glad you agree John, I’ve seen too many writers sell out and become hacks because of money. Art is its own reward. Cheers!
It was nice to read this first thing, while I attempt to venture back in…remembering to be true to yourself as an artist is indeed the point. Expressing from a genuine heart for the sake of expressing its truth alone, is the reward, not attempting to gain or impress others. When it is true, it shines. I really appreciated reading this. 🙂
Best,
mel
So glad you related Mel, the truth always shines and as I believe that creativity is akin to the divine spark or creation itself, it must always be respected for its gifts. Take care my friend.
I have to agree. If I wrote only what people like I would be popular, maybe generic, but to myself I would, I could not be happy with the finished result. You can tell when someone sells out, the quality just seems lacking. Great piece Tony.
Much appreciated Paul, glad you related and agree with the sentiments. Art of any kind is to me sacrosanct as it is pure expression and more than just our intentions in creating it. Cheers!
Very well stated, Tony. Reading this verse made me realize why I was not too happy on sites where I have to follow rigid rules to write for the reader, not for myself. Self-expression is so important for a poet, or any artist. A reader will either relate or not – but, when they do relate and appreciate that is what gives us the joy of expressing from our heart and soul. Great work, dear poet.
Thanks Phyllis, yes an important truth to remember, our gifts are from the heart as they should be and as you say, readers either connect or not, their choice. Take care.
