Through Life with You

The girl he spent a lifetime with …

The memories were everywhere,

everywhere she looked.

The years they had gone so quickly,

but they were years of much love.

She would always tell him,

how wonderful it is to go –

through life with you.

Together they had grown,

together they had seen so much.

Life had been kind

and they still looked at each other –

through the eyes of first love.

Nothing had changed,

not for them,

they lived in a world –

of their very own.

Sure the strands of gray,

were too many to count,

but when they were together –

the years all seemed to melt away.

She always felt afraid,

afraid to wonder how many more years,

in which they’d walk side by side,

but it didn’t matter,

because one would wait  for the other –

in the world beyond.

She would take the good with the bad

and never, ever let herself be sad.

Then she remembered,

the first time she’d seen him smile

and then and there she knew –

that their love would always be true.

She came upon all those old recordings,

the ones they’d danced to,

all of the first years –

when their love was still new.

So she gathered them up

and hurried on downstairs,

before he came home.

She had to make sure,

that the room was decorated,

like for the first dance they ever had.

It would be prom night one more time

and she had no doubt,

that he’d be thrilled

and delighted to find –

his prom queen  waiting for him at home.

The door opened and he stepped inside,

the perfume of flowers,

was in the air,

he entered the living room

and then he smiled,

he was back in high school,

he was just seventeen

and there was the girl,

that he had spent a lifetime with.

All dolled up for the prom

and ready to dance with him,

long into the night,

they played the old songs.

Toasted each other

and delighted in their love,

ever so often,

it’s so grand,

to step back in time

and rekindle the romance.
