Measurement, More Than Just Physicality

Physical quantities, defined magnitudinally

Assigning status conventionally

Plus numerically, and making

Observations that determine comparisons

While discovering you’ll soon be

Reaching across all disciplines and spectrums

Dependencies, redundancies, and complexities

Foundations in the purest simplicities

Becoming apparent in an obvious

Process where the purest forms of all

Objects are examined for similarities

With varying parameters or indicators

With the kingdoms of length and weight

Are not hindered by those of volume

While time often has its definition bent

In order to breech the barriers of both sides

Simultaneously being a unit of measurement

And something measurable

So situated that leaping years resemble individual

Tick mark on a chart, without statistical variance

When applied linearly over a lengthy series

Yet the complication of this duality

Hasn’t a domicile in the arena of distance

Where continual addition presents

No more a challenge to the accepted convention

Aside from adding yet another zero

And there obligatory naming criteria

Something larger than the billions

Or trillions, or zillions, until in the distance

The gates of infinity are visible

For just a brief moment

Before retreating to points yet undiscovered

Still, the effects of gravity can be employed

To determine the calculations and measurement

Of force, which will be critical

In the determination of weight

For a ton is only a ton when measured on earth

Such are the way that standards function

And yet standardization comes with a price

Settlement on a collective may become unproductive

Should discovery provide a new dichotomy

Imagining the differing may be the key

To unlocking something

Until said discovery, debating the commonality

Of metrics versus customary

And both against those from antiquity

Should an inch be chosen over a centimeter

A kilo, pound, ton, or tonne

Pint imperial or pint customary

Quite different as evidenced to see

Measurement is fair and right

Accepted, protected, and objective

Yet still the question stays in sight

Which is correct

Celsius or Fahrenheit

I write about everything and sometimes nothing at all. I'm fascinated by old things, rusty things, abandoned places, or anywhere that a secret might be unearthed. I'm passionate about history and many of my pieces are anchored in one concept of time or another. I've always been a writer, dating back to my youth, but the last decade has been a time of growth for me. I'm continually pushing the limitations of vocabulary, syntax, and descriptive phrasing.

great work Ralph and impressive wordplay. It is crazy we still use different measures these days. Very much enjoyed my friend.

Oddly enough, I had originally set out to write a slam-type of poem using all the different units of measurement like ounces, ton, etc. but quickly found myself moving down this path. Thanks so much for taking time to read and comment
