That Knock on the Door

That Knock on the Door
That Knock on the Door

Absolved of sins, of everything,
pious minds inflict their will
and belief on any breathing target,
and in truth they think their motives pure,
delivered to the gates of heaven,
for their selfless converting.

Yet, how selfless is their fate,
when reward is what they seek,
belief irrevocable but self endowed to speak
in the name of God,
words chosen in repetition
of pious self importance.

I face them often, and with kindness let them go,
and their sincerity is obvious,
but are they aware of the irony,
the entirety of their chosen plight,
reliant on a promise of salvation
through converting others, as they are right?

Being right is a conviction of delusion,
to be so closed to possibility, that deviation is sin,
and regardless of persecution, of arrogant beliefs,
they trudge the streets with family in tow,
exacting their personal beliefs like hooks,
attached to the chosen ones, to know.

The club is growing, the delusion is great,
but reward can never be a reason for any religious state,
just a ploy of marketing, of politics and complicity,
the control of people through belief is not love,
that is a human failing, a delusion of power and goal,
and so I smile sweetly, but know who’s sold.

I agree with you on this, Tony. I cannot grasp why those who preach and try to convert in the name of God, saying it is love, when they can so quickly victimize people, even friends, with hate and lies. I do not believe that is the way of God. How can such people believe they will receive rewards? You have brought up very good thoughts and expressed them well. Thank you for writing this.

Glad you appreciated it Phyllis; I had a group of such people on my doorstep the other day and it prompted me to write this piece. Cheers!
