The Photograph

The PhotographAffairs of the heart can begin in the most innocent ways. We can all look back in our lives and remember the moments that set our souls on fire. We are all human and part of the human condition is we fall in love – and once fallen we pursue it like no other emotion. How it happens and when it happens have only one thing in common and that is the very first glance. In my life, it has always been the simple things like a young girl handing me a purple Iris petal. Another girl wearing my coat after dancing to keep warm. Another when a girl answers the door on a first date, who is the roommate of your date. Or, it can be simply a photograph that crosses your computer screen.

“The Photograph”
The Photograph, one minute it was there on my screen
A woman, maybe the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

Her eyes, yes, those eyes of green with a hint of blue,
My curiosity was sparked as the minutes grew.

Lost in thought, lost track of time I did that day,
As her smile, her eyes, her beauty took me away.

“What is she like” I went to sleep thinking that night,
She invaded my dreams, some way that seemed right.

Hers and only about her was what I had dreamed,
The spell had been cast, gypsy magic it seemed.

Drawn to her like I had known her all my life,
Maybe in a past life we had been husband and wife.

“The Photograph” thinking about it seemed surreal,
Knowing love had struck me and she was at the wheel.

Dreams she was made of, talk to her, let me be known,
Thoughts of her as I reached down to pick up the phone.

Looking back in time before she and I were “we”,
For me it was “the Photograph” which was the key.

The rugged beauty of the Colorado Rockies foothills shaped Kurt James’ life from birth, with the ever-present sight of snow-capped peaks and the constant whisper of the wind. Having spent twenty years amidst the wide-open spaces of South Dakota, Kurt’s connection to his family’s western Kansas heritage remains strong; he recalls the tallgrass prairie and the endless blue skies. Over time, Mr. James developed a deep appreciation for the landscapes and history of the American West, spending countless hours exploring its rugged beauty and studying its unique culture. The Denver Post, PM Magazine, and 9NEWS, all well-known Denver, Colorado media sources, have highlighted the powerful and evocative work of poet and novelist Kurt James. Focusing on Old West history, Kurt contributes feature articles to HubPages and Creative Exiles, exploring the eerie silence of ghost towns, the thrilling tales of outlaws and gunfighters, and the evocative imagery found in the Rocky Mountains. Kurt’s early admiration for writers such as Jack London, Louis L’Amour, and Max Brand played a significant role in honing his skills as a storyteller. Twenty-one books (and counting!) transport readers to the Colorado Rockies and the Old West through Kurt’s vivid descriptions; the feel of rough-hewn cabins, the sounds of coyotes howling under starry skies, and the smells of campfire smoke and sagebrush are all palpable. Find Kurt James novels, short stories, reference books, and poetry—published by Midnight Wind Publishing—in print copies or digital downloads at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Goodreads, and other excellent bookstores; explore the diverse range of formats available. Currently in production - The 10th book in his Rocky Mountain Series - Lee Moomaw Former Lawman. Kurt is a proud member of the Western Writers of America, a group that values storytelling.

I so relate, saw a picture of a girl once on the net, and madly fell in love with her, or perhaps her beauty. They say a picture can tell a thousand words and so it can be. Nicely emotive and penned my friend.

Visual is the first thing we are turned on by. The eyes, the curvature of the mouth, etc.. Beyond all that is the connection. The butterflies usually tell us if its right. The madness that follows means youve made the right choice, but it usually starts with visual connection first. Good piece, good read Kurt.

Hello Kurt , Been a while . A photograph ……sometimes I believe life itself is nothing but a reel of still photo’s . But you have captured true beauty in this writing , How many times has a photo of a woman grabbed us -or do you remember long ago the “disco ball ” of mirrors and the lights of the dance halls ? How that one instant image and then it was gone and then the darkness beyond that moment ? How many images did break our hearts ? Ah ,the memories and the passions of our youth .
    Nice write !

    Kurt,

I love this! Yes, the “human condition” of falling in-love, and pursuing our desire like none other. When I am in-love, I feel as if I can move mountains, and jump rainbows! It is as if I am double-alive, and there is magic in everything around me. Your poem, and your words, describe Romantic Love so perfectly. So powerful!
