Without Respect for Life

Life abounds in every space in the universe;
there is no void, only within our minds,
for not accepting reality,
as all matter is made of the same stuff,
from cosmic dust to the earth itself,
we are all a collection of infinitely variable connections,
in form and state and consciousness,
none more worthy that another,
each, whether inanimate of animated,
simple or complex,
have connection to the environment,
a consciousness not obvious,
but there nonetheless.
When we disrespect life,
no matter what that is, we show ignorance,
when we heartlessly kill or destroy
living things and environments,
we show our lack of compassion,
and when we drain natural resources
without a thought for the imbalance it creates,
we are both ignorant and avaricious,
for life together must exist in harmony,
balance a necessity and conclusion
of whatever we do as humanity,
impacting upon our lives,
with often turbulent consequence.
We judge life so frivolously,
our believed intellectual superiority,
but a scratch of what life is in complexity,
what secrets are held and truths
of which we are so far, oblivious,
yet we continue to plunder our world,
destroy life, environs and create imbalance
in just about everything we do,
seeing only our supposed superiority
as a license to take whatever we want,
without remorse, without consideration,
until we shall choke on our own pollution
and be just a virus that eventually perished.

Oh boy! Does this ever hit the core of merciless destruction of life. I once wrote an article on the disappearance of forests and the causes, it made me cry, Tony. We have lost something like 60% of forest life on Earth over generations. That is not just destroying trees, it is the loss of habitat for birds and animals, which means those creatures die out also. To know that humanity is responsible for that loss of life is horrifying. Disrespect for life in any form has grown alarmingly. There is a huge tree out back of my place where I sometimes place berries and sweet cakes for the faeries. When we have storms with strong winds I worry so much about our faerie tree. Great work with this piece, Tony.
Glad you appreciated it Phyllis, yes humanity has done so much wrong, and still, even knowing the consequence, we continue down the same path. sad.
