The State of Society, the World

The more I know, the less I realize I know,
for life has secrets,
not all that obvious to passers by,
and those secrets are only revealed to those
able to accept them,
able to see beyond our conditioning,
and the illusions of society and expectations,
a reality of repression within which we all suffer.
Freedom is a misnomer, as is equality,
these expectations maligned
by the very nature of society,
its rules and our compliance a necessity of survival,
yet how much is our personal freedom challenged,
how much has society robbed us of our sanity,
the very freedom of thought and action
that make us who we are, define us?
We are consumers, we strive for possessions,
not because we need them, because it is our duty
to uphold commercialism,
debt and the slavery to a system
that can only benefit those at the top,
all others marginalised and grouped into manageable
collectives of religious, philosophical, political, racial,
and socio-economic classes that in their separation
keep the populous struggling, distracted and not of one power.
We are mushrooms,
and truth will never be ours to know and understand,
for society grew from those who created it,
thus structured and advantaging they alone,
the rest of us, allowed to survive as long as we comply,
fill that pyramid that in the end,
burgeons only at the top,
and we, at the base thankful for the crumbs we’ve fed.
Some thoughts for consideration.

Really very thought-provoking, Tony. Most of us muddle along in life doing what we think is right, but how often do we stop and think about these thoughts you pose for us? Not often – makes me think we are robots just following along where we are told to, sort of like the little guy in your image up there. Are we all so well trained that we are content as long as we make it through each day safely? You definitely give “Some thoughts for consideration.” Well done, dear poet.
Thank you, yes the truth can be shocking when we open our eyes to what truly goes on in the world. Glad it made you think Phyllis. take care
Loved your words of wisdom Tony..there is a certain norm of society we all follow, trying to keep up with everyone else..it seeems that we have sacrificed our individuality..very thought provoking..thank you so much for sharing..
Glad you connected with my thoughts Anjana, your kind words much appreciated.
