Betrayal by birth
Betrayal by Birth

He came into this world
I saw him curled in his bed
the surviving of much happenstance
and as he grew and joined
up with the living
he matured beyond his years
but still oh so young
He grew up and fell in love
and fell as well into fatherhood
and he learned all about love
of his children
of his wife
but still oh so young
And then they sent him off to war
for the good of fellow man
for the love of country
and it’s people
and he did love them all
all just before they taught him to kill
but still oh so young
I went to see him today at seventy three
after they told him of his cancer
the greatest enemy of all
they told him there is no cure
and I saw again the young boy curled in his bed
yet still oh so young
And I realized that there can be a betrayal by birth

A poignant write Ed, as life can deliver many journeys. War is just futile and until we realize how futile, there will always be casualties, generation after generation. Nicely penned and thought-provoking my friend.
Very well written, Ed. I can feel the sadness for a life on the last journey. Lovely tribute to your friend.
