The Mark of a Good Writer

A Good Writer Isn’t Born, He or She is Made…
Expression in any genre is a miraculous thing; we all use the same paint, the same clay, the same words, notes or medium to express ourselves. Yet what differs in the outcome is something of an esoteric wonder. We have varying levels of talent, we have our own inspirations, aspirations and experience, and ultimately everything each one of us completes is singularly unique to the world. What truly makes the difference in the quality, in its appreciation and its attention is our very souls. We give freely of ourselves, as if part of us is literally woven within our work. That heart of a creative piece is not only uplifting, but the very essence of ourselves embroidered into our work. It thus implores those who observe, creating a connection that no other aspect can conceive.
Regardless of skill and experience, without that heart in a work, it falls short of meaning and feels somehow empty. With skill, experience and heart, an artist’s work can be so poignant in its rendering, we are effected in our own soul. We then respond to the thoughts behind the work, experiencing what the artist did in creating it. This is miraculous, as it is all our senses melding into one feeling of connection, to understand the intent and the unspoken words of the artist.
When I see such beauty in any art form, with such perfect melding of life and expression, it brings me to tears. For how closer can one become to any person, especially one with whom we’ve not likely ever met. That for me is the most important aspect of creative expression, that ability to put the soul out there, to be witnessed and understood.
Specifically in writing, there are many skills required to express precisely and with artful rendering, in any of the written genres. But again it is the warmth of heart and intention that connects to the reader. For without belief in what we do, our heart and soul immersed within it, what use would that expression be? So we seek to share our art and love for the written word, and in doing so share of ourselves in a very personal and selfless way. That, as I believe, is the mark of a good writer.

Tony, I couldn’t have said it better myself. You have, I believe, captured the mark of a good writer. This sentence says it all, “Regardless of skill and experience, without that heart in a work, it falls short of meaning and feels somehow empty.”
Glad you connected John and appreciated the thoughts. Cheers!
What a wonderful expression of the “mark of a good writer”. Excellent work Tony. If writing does not have that heart and soul it is empty. Great work.
Much appreciated Phyllis, yes its so important. Cheers!
Beautifully written. Very true. As a reader, works that make me cry or laugh or both make me connect to the writer. As writers, I believe that’s what we are all striving for.
It’s always nice to hear a refined writer’s opinion on what makes a true difference in expression. As a reader, I couldn’t agree more, it’s the heart, the way, that shines through to make a lasting impression. The words can be the same, the content even, but there is definitely an underlining spark that carries a piece of art. Loved reading and thinking on this.
Best,
Mel
Thank you Mel, and appreciate the compliment. It really is the most important aspect of writing with true purpose. Take care.
Glad you connect to my thoughts Emese, and welcome to the site. Hope you enjoy the work and connections to these fine collection of talented writers. Cheers!
Tony, I recognize much of what you wrote here. The heart and passion we put into our work is the element which makes it unique. Thank you for these wonderful insights.
Much appreciated Chris, glad you related and agreed, it is the mark of a good writer. Cheers!
I am so happy I come across this Tony.. how kind of you to write such a meaningful note on writing which is benificial to all who aspire to persue the beauty that lies in the genre..i very often doubt my writing because they don’t follow any specific format, but I do try to put my heart into each and every thing I write…so I am so delighted that you think it is enough to make a good write..can’t tell how uplifting this feels.. thank you so much for sharing this..
I’m glad you related Anjana, and yes you very naturally write with such emotion and heart and never question your individuality, because no-one else can writer as you do, and that’s to be admired and celebrated. Take care dear poet.
For without a soul, expression is meaningless. You’ve captured the true spirit of a writer, sharing ones own experiences or others from the very deepest part of your being evokes the movement from your readers. For without passion flowing from the pen, the words are lost, empty and hollow. Like the greatest musicians, opera singers, actors, writers and poets. THEY move the SOULS of so many, striving to be akin to them is a worthy goal. You sir are among those stars, your very passion and oft bleeding heart move peoples to tears. For those of us gifted like this, be thankful, we’ve been blessed by the gods and possibly channeling many of our long dead but never forgotten creative, talented artists. This sir is worth of sharing to many.
Appreciate your kind words Vincent, and I agree our goal is connection, to share our visions and be meaningful to readers. Take care.
