Before You Slip Away
Before you slip into the darkness of your mind,
please tell me that you truly loved me,
back then, when the world was sweet
and life blew bubbles just for the perfection of it,
when autumns reigned in our hearts
in flashing golds and amber hues,
and summer held days so long,
we wished they’d never end.
Your hand is so cool in mine, so frail,
as if your warmth of heart is sucked dry
and each breath a slow deflating to stillness,
yet I ask you, can you hear my words,
my heart breaking,
knowing what we had, what we endured
was worth the pain, the passion,
for now your eyes have seen all they will,
and your fragile hold relenting.
Do you remember the joy, the births,
each child a perfection we couldn’t quite grasp,
far beyond our hearts, too beautiful to hold,
and all the struggle that led us to part,
was it all worth it from the start;
I wish you could tell me,
so as the darkness imbues your world,
I will know you don’t regret love,
for as fleeting as it may seem now.
I let you go,
with all my heart’s surrender,
to travel well on your journey,
and think fondly of we,
for all the goodness we did bring,
of life and joy and everything we did for family,
for all we could in love’s name,
even though we failed,
we lived our best intention.
