Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…

For many, life on earth
is an exercise in futility,
life itself ignored,
for the pursuits of self
and all aspects of accumulation,
of power and gain,
our modicum of intellect
used for self-embellishment,
the nurturing of ego and arrogance
in a world of designed balance.
These people are those who destroy,
who create wars,
who undermine nature,
and in righteous belief
segregate humanity,
all to initiate conflicts
that fuel their own agendas,
aspire wealth and further power
in their quest
for self-worship and adoration.
Interesting how sentience
can lead to such self-absorption,
and how quickly humanity
fell to its own childlike pride,
the mere process of existing
a focus on greed,
while suffering measures the incompetence,
the sheer dis-compassionate nature
that marks our tenuous reign on earth,
and as nature and our hold crumbles,
we remain undeterred.
Nature our silent guide
has always resounded clearly,
yet we see nothing of her perfection,
the processes that bind us to life,
and instead refuse to learn,
thinking that technology alone will save us,
our non-thinking reliance on it
the ignorant truth of our undoing,
and as we ignore the spiritual,
the ideals of love and compassion
that could save us,
we are simply transfixed
by the self-created image of ourselves.

Beautiful poem Tony. Reading it made empathize with the problem described and made me look forwards to a possible solution. Unfortunately that solution never came, although you touched on it in the last paragraph. But besides that personal preference, nicely written.
The solution is self-evident, and like the poem one may never come. We are a sad lot, humanity, stuck in all the wrong directions. Glad you appreciated it Jerry.
So well written and so true, Tony. The term: ‘love thyself first’ has been greatly misunderstood by many. Focusing only on the self is defeat before even trying anything. Love must come from within the heart and reach out to others. Great work.
Much appreciated Phyllis, glad you related and enjoyed my thoughts. Take care.
