Belief and Contradiction

Belief and Contradiction
Belief and Contradiction…ignorance versus life

No belief is complete,
no belief is uniformly adhered to,
nor perceived the same, accepted the same
or held in meaning the same,
for we are individuals,
yet we seek the commonality of belief
for reasons of security,
of belonging and sharing a meaningful life.

Why then are we so against beliefs
that in some way contradict our own,
when our own group is filled with degrees of belief,
unwritten but understood
in the relating of ideas and the agreement of ideology,
no matter what that is,
or how removed from convention,
no matter how dissimilar to our brothers and sisters.

The human mind is a complex
and unyielding trap of information:
some points agreed, some disagreed
and some of ambivalent degree,
all gleaned in order for us to make choices,
to be a part, or reject or accept in principal,
and thus find groups within which we fit,
in order to experience a full and secured life.

The construction of a group in principal,
should never be opposed to someone-else’s group,
as we are all diverse in thought and judgement, as it should be,
and therefore should appreciate others points of view,
despite agreement or disagreement,
and this is the problem with definitive belief,
there is no compromise, all else seen as wrong
and therefore an affront, an opposition.

Thus is the state of humanity,
intelligent enough to advance science and medicine
and technologies,
yet too ignorant to get along,
to forego egos and be open minded,
rather than believe fully unproven esoteric beliefs.
One could only assume we are not that intelligent.

Now there are thoughts to really think about. I had to laugh when I read your last sentence, Tony. It also made me think of the world of wild animals in nature and that they seem to be fortunate they do not have the complex issues of beliefs – or do they? I am sure a monkey has different beliefs than a leopard. Jeesh! My mind is wide open tonight and wandering all over the place. Very thought provoking piece, Tony. Well done.

Glad it made you think Phyllis, I guess none of us really know exactly what each other thinks, even our subconscious keeps a lot from our conscious. LOL It makes the concept of truth a very subjective concept. Cheers!

The most radical beliefs require that we force others to either believe what we believe or die. The least radical requires only that we believe in someone we know from historical records once walked the Earth and instead of killing His un-believers, we are directed to love them and turn the other cheek.

    Excellent thought provoker, Tony!
