Behind Those Eyes

Evil rarely hides
behind blood-soaked snarling teeth,
and monsters more unnoticed live
within our reality not nightmares real,
for they in truth live as we,
unbeknownst in daily life, entrenched,
a smile, a kindness in seeming strength,
just to put us at ease.

Yet underneath,
a squirming evil lives, biding time,
a passage to the darkness it evokes,
when people have reason
to vent, to flight or vengeance take,
and the path of darkness rises to fateful acts,
we in disbelief are taken aback,
for what was unknown now faced in stark attack.

What believed once softened, now at odds,
as evil shows its colors dim,
and this reveal changes everything,
to know what truly lives within;
and redefine we must,
those who now show their core,
as evil lives until that path is opened,
and the ugly truth too much to ignore.

Once I believed few of evil state,
but now with open eyes
so many sympathize with darkness,
for they have lost their souls,
lost to greed and selfish needs
that cause havoc in the world,
and given their head
they will destroy all that love creates.

If someone shows you who they are,
believe them.
