Slaves to the System

Slaves…and we hadn’t noticed

Slaves to the System
Slaves to the System…did you notice?

Taught the days beneath our feet,
paths assigned and directions given,
while we in supposed freedom goals,
our dreams so orchestrated
as the weights that bind us, whole.

Freedom sought in heart’s needs,
plagiarized first by the powers be, as we
enticed by greed and consumer wanting,
debt then slavery our plight,
until life ends, debt bereft or drowning.

Manufactured we,
every article we buy, every image we see,
all aligned at our dreams to be,
our paths of slavery planned,
our consumerism a demand,
as we labor the live given.

And we applaud the films and entertainment,
the technology so vast and beguiling,
games so addictive and distracting,
as we walk the steps
of someone else’s freedom.

Have you wondered,
how you arrived at such a place,
working so hard, in debt and stressed,
just hanging on by a thread,
while a few reap the rewards?

You are either the system that oppresses you,
or you are free;
did you choose or perhaps
it has never occurred to you,
that the powers that be
have taken your freedom, and you hadn’t noticed.

That is a very powerful train of thought, Tony. Here we have lived life the way we thought we should when all along it was not our way, but under control of those who believe they know better. What ever happened to the simple days of a basket of eggs in trade for fabric to make clothes? I know, technology changed so much. Well penned verse. Do we ever wonder? Yes, often.
