Honesty the Foundation

Innocuous chatter as blurred inarticulate words,
perhaps parlous undertones of innocent slurs,
when conversations are woven in threads,
to put some advantageous idea to bed,
but I am so unwilling, my threshold breached,
of covert missions from egos leached.
Why can’t conversations be positive,
with the intention of connection, and nothing more,
when so many sit upon their thrones
lording their imagined power, like drones,
and I see their ploys, their presentations so pure,
and what’s beneath the truth been cured.
Honesty is a much sought concept,
in a world where advantage comes before the tale,
yet to me the heart cannot engage the lies,
the attempts to control, manipulate and contrive,
until honesty is known, a heart given in sharing,
and the expression at least caring.
For what reason do we reach out,
do we connect and learn for one-another,
certainly not to better ourselves at someone else’s expense,
nor use them for any selfish gain,
or to do your bidding in a dangerous game,
that removes friendship from possibility.
I do not understand how life can be lived so heartlessly,
so dishonestly, so artfully intrusive,
as if manipulation was a matter-of-fact deal,
hurting no-one, all intentions concealed,
just for some modicum of gain,
some lame narcissistic game.
Honesty to me, is a pillar of thought,
a foundation of the beginnings of any relationship.

Without honesty there can be no relationship in my opinion. Friendship or intimate, a relationship must be built on a solid foundation and that begins with honesty. Imagine what it would be like to find out that a relationship started with untruths. Well, that would be like a brick building built on weak sticks – it could not even begin to last. To converse for the sole purpose of connecting is so pleasant, so real. Nicely penned sentiment, Tony.
Thanks Phyllis, glad you agree and like me, you value honesty a basic requirement of any relationship. Cheers!
Wonderful poetry and your poetic words certainly speak the truth. Without honesty there cannot be any kind of real relationship.
Glad you related Rasma, yes honesty is the foundation. Take care
