The Veil

The Veil…an unwanted life.

Tis not the love that scares me,
its the cruelty and deceit
of voices who dare speak its name,
and in all time and experience,
love’s favor fades like the gloaming,
rich in vibrant hues at first,
to then pale to a light-less dark void,
where love could have thrived.

Tis not words that warn me,
but the promises from self-centered minds,
always posturing for better response,
better purchase on that chosen road of gain,
and I see their guile, their smiled reassurance,
as if they hold copyright on the truth,
and we are mere numbers
in their well-oiled machine.

Love by proxy is a disappointment,
so revered and then shunned on a whim so weak,
it shocks the likes of honest hearts,
and too many times it serves not the ideal,
to wield its power in manipulation,
and vulnerable we are when gold is sought,
and lead is furnished,
as that sinking feeling takes hold.

Tis not life that scares me,
its the losing of those we love,
and when love is lived of heart
and beauty held as sacrosanct,
joy can be within us whole,
as we walk the times of our lives,
knowing that fear is just a veil to love,
and living should bare no veils at all.

I agree, Tony, that “knowing that fear is just a veil to love, and living should bare no veils at all.” Veils hide so much and there are no veils when love is sincere and true, thus making a place for love to thrive. Very thoughtful and well written verse.
