Physical and Spiritual

What we accumulate
beyond our need to survive,
could be considered ill-gotten gains,
for accumulation is a false god,
and possessions just tie us down
to the base physical life,
not remotely important
in our ascension and spiritual development.
If you believe that life
is purely a physical experience,
and that striving for wealth, comfort and security
is what it’s all about,
then may happiness follow you
with all your endeavours,
but it won’t,
because that is a superficial reality.
Pushing, striving for status, money, power
and all the benefits of the pleasures of the flesh,
limit you to a life of restriction,
and in your wilful pushing
the creation of obstacles and strife,
that will surely cause grief and pain,
with circumstances that both restrict
and bring harm as a consequence.
Focus is the key,
for we need to address physical life,
live within its parameters to survive,
but contentions on this level are pointless,
for the war is fought within,
how we think, what we believe
and how we deal with opposition
what really defines us in life.
Balance then is the answer
to living physically and growing spiritually,
knowing that true joy comes from the later
not in any worthy way from the physical,
for that alone is like a single grain of sand upon a beach
in the full spectrum of life,
and what fulfils the soul comes from love
and all the attributes of it’s expression.

You are so right, Tony – “true joy comes from ” … “what fulfills the soul comes from love
and all the attributes of it’s expression.” Defining what is really needed to survive physically and letting the rest go is so important for spiritual peace. Over the years I have greatly narrowed down what I actually need and find I can focus more on my spiritual growth and skills as a writer. Simplicity has become a way of life for me. Reading your verse makes me wonder what people will do with all the stuff they have accumulated over many years if the world situation gets worse.
Thanks Phyllis, yes in the end material things mean very little, its our loved ones and connections with people that define our lives and happiness.
You nailed that one, Tony!So rightly and nicely said. May we focus on the things that really matter in life!
So true and what a different world it would be. Thanks Bill glad you appreciated my thoughts.
There is simply nothing more precious than those experiences and connections, shared with loving intention. Society is aching everywhere to come back to that reality. The physical race is so ingrained, and misguided, and the spiritual…so readily misconstrued, so much as to continue bringing war upon one another. Finding the personal balance and growth is certainly the key, and your writings always inspire looking within, to find peace. Thank you Tony, always a pleasure.
Best,
Mel
Too kind Mel, and so pleased you relate to my thoughts. Take care.
Tony as usual you expounded so beautifully in poetic form which you always do so very well. The importance of humanity, loving, sharing, peace and connections so important, more so than any monetary gain on this planet. Your second stanza summed it up for me. Well written and I continue to follow your work. Peace and blessings I send to you this day my poetic friend.
Thanks you so much Vincent, I always so appreciate your comments and kindness, coming from such an accomplished poet. I do hope we stay in touch as I am sad to see you leave TCE. Take care my friend.
Tony, these are sentiments I too seem to express over and over in my own writing. I agree totally that wealth and material possessions are not what make your life valuable and happy. Kindness and love are what is important.
Always John, and we as writers need to keep repeating this message as so many don’t yet see it. Cheers!
