Momentary…this light
Momentary

Sun dusts a dry horizon with hope,
winter’s grey mood momentarily in abeyance,
as light transcends the sleepy veil
and awakens all with a smile,
a day of light prevail.
Warmth of light, a soulful bliss,
as heads tilt to sun, eyes closed
imbibing all there is,
yet so fleeting this sensual gift,
as clouds amass and gloom creates the rift.
Then chill returns as if a switch,
and warmth fades to icy pitch,
and my heart sinks into that numbing season sigh,
as dull returns to eye, and mood,
and sky feels weight, as gone this interlude.
Glimpses are cruel,
a small reprieve, a reminder of what’s missing,
and then the darkness steals our hopes,
and dreams of halcyon days
return our minds to living.
Oh winter, your countenance of beauty
does not deter a mind from rejecting,
all that frozen breath you’re emitting,
and layered am I of warmth to just survive,
your yearly bleak affronts, the cleansing you aspire.

Winter sure can be unforgiving and stubborn. It can tease one into thoughts of warmth and joy, then take it away as the cold and darkness comes back. Great verse, Tony, painting a vivid image. As I read your poem I was reminded of an “almost boyfriend” from many years ago. He would open up and show warmth and hope with things he said, then retreat back where I could not reach him. I learned from him, though, to have faith in myself. Funny how weather can bring out some deep thoughts related to the past. I enjoyed this read.
Thanks Phyllis, I think that any system in life is relat-able on many levels, including weather: the four seasons that can mirror our moods. Nature truly guides our human path if people would only listen. Glad you enjoyed. Take care.
It’s 95 degrees here in America today, but I know the days are coming that you so beautifully wrote about. Thanks for the reminder of ever-change, Tony.
yes I know, complete opposites. Glad you enjoyed the cool reprieve. Thanks Bill.
