I Am the Sum…
Like plains of vast wilderness,
the darkness of my heart spreads out in quest,
of containing all the refuse of a soul, I reject,
the dark and bitter doubts of living
that bleeds me of my whole,
my being, with limits.
And in this wasteland, where nothing grows,
the dust of past and anguish shows
the reasons why it there remains,
far from mind and memory,
just a weigh station so temporary,
before the darkness fades from sight.
Yet echoes sometimes ring out loud,
and I shudder for their intervening,
and hope that I will not connect,
to their recurrence and streaming,
rather ignore they exist at all and
hope the darkness consumes them.
I stand upon a precipice,
from airy heights to the dark plains beyond,
where choices place us in scope of life,
the light imbued and darkness shunned,
and wonder what I am between these extremes,
my whole the sum of all I’ve deemed of consequence.
And so the darkness stays,
and light the presence of its decay,
but memories echo regardless, my learning gift,
and although the pain subsides in time, a rift
that in the end placates my woes
and leads me to better days.
