As Love Ebbs
As Love Ebbs

Having left a full life behind,
broken to a solitary mind,
I reflect on all that was lost in love
and that proved beyond doubt
that the word is mostly misunderstood.
Commitment is an exaggeration,
a conflict of belief and will,
the premise of wanting everything
but at no cost at all, is expected,
and on a whim, disconnected.
The ideal has been maligned
into a temporary promise,
a commitment of until displeasure
may tear us apart,
or until greener pastures beckon.
I say this is not love,
not even an approximation of it,
a slur of deceit and planned obsolescence,
the fickle mind of pleasure
and the rejection of imperfection.
Love has been lost to spoiled children,
who live for greed and pleasures
found in monogamy’s end,
hardly a spine or any integrity among them,
to fathom what love is or holds.
Sadness floods the world,
for love ebbs into a dark sea of despair,
its shallow face of sex a poor substitute,
for what the ideal speaks to sound souls,
who want more from life than instant gratification.

Love just is what it is and unique to the two who feel it, that special feeling that does not exist with anyone else. Honest love really cannot be described – it is a feeling, a knowing, an energy that flows from the heart, it is what happens when one sees or hears their beloved, it is how one looks at the sunset, hears the ocean waves or a bird song, feels the wind, connects to Nature, it is life itself. It is sad that the meaning of love has been lost to so many and is not valued as it should be. Very reflective verse, Tony. Well done.
Thanks Phyllis, I feel than many people have lost track of truth and particularly the young in their quest to find happiness have found gratification and little else. Take care
I agree with you, Tony, that “many people have lost track of truth and particularly the young in their quest to find happiness have found gratification and little else.” I am old-fashioned, I guess, and find that love makes me see everything differently, see more beauty in my world.Take care.
Yes beauty and love and compassion and kindness all live in the same place. When we accept that path of thought and openness, we then see more clearly the potential of humanity and indeed the core of what life is. Without these ideals, we simple live a selfish and base physical life; at least that’s what I believe. Take care.
