Belief Without Purpose
Holding fast to that tenuous thread
that tethers us to a world in crisis,
hope alone seems all that’s left,
contentions rife and love bereft;
yet beauty still underpins
this time and place,
the possibility of love and grace,
if only rage would grasp the truth
and see how pointless this path.
How can death and malevolence
somehow eclipse the ideal of peace,
how can souls want war,
hatred feed a soul with darkness and gore;
and difference it seems is all it takes
for hatred to give a heart release,
but what pleasure can death be
to any rational mind,
a heart with the potential of love?
I do not understand,
cannot grasp this wanton destruction,
when life of such beauty
and pleasured experience awaits;
yet people choose to judge, to hate, to discriminate,
instead of accepting we are individuals,
of potentials only limited by ourselves,
and learning from one-another
is our sacred call.
Religion, philosophy, culture, customs,
all reflections of our beliefs, our heritage,
and this is what we should share,
accept as miraculous, not contentious;
why then are they the bane of our existence,
the seeds of war, of hatred and malice,
are we jealous, in fear or zealous
to decimate what world we have forged,
a civilisation so advanced, yet poor.
And so we hold nervously
to that thread of sanity,
that will or will not endure,
and sadness fills my heart that so many of us
want peace and love and tolerance to saves us;
yet there are those
who want death in righteous belief,
a belief without purpose.

Tony, I too am saddened and at a loss to understand why the world is in its current state. In the movies good usually wins out over evil…I hope that is also the final outcome in real life. Great writing.

Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try!
The 24 hour news cycle reporting, mass killings etc. is also partly to blame. It feeds Copycats and inflames notoriety. Really these horrors are not fit to be shown as news. The recent Nice horrors were covered all day on the news with live feeds. Why show this stuff?
I know what you mean John, the news is lucky to have one positive story: that’s ridiculous. Talk about breeding fear. I guess that’s what they want, to control a fearful populous. Thank you my friend.
