A Dulled Refrain

Events like skipped heartbeats
dissipate within the fading of time,
and memories linger as if to remind us
of afferent dreams once thought,
yearning hearts once held;
and we are the sum of us,
our every thought and experience,
fleshed out in time to meld
with mind and beliefs astute,
to fashion our being within life’s affront.
The pain of experience
becomes a red-flagged pulse of past,
the searing hurt the echo of a soul’s learning,
and when we visit them we cringe
for all that occurred, yet now in memory,
a faint step in a long road;
and so pain leads us to perspective,
the sharp edges removed from it,
where reflection whispers thoughts of solace,
and pain becomes a part of us, in flesh and mind.
And so the flesh reveals in lines and tarnish,
the marks of experience
and the hurts of heart and mind display,
what souls survive and overcome,
and the mind reveals what thoughts have fashioned it,
what beliefs have taken hold,
what secrets hide in shadows
and what love and need yearns to be;
all this upon a canvas, a countenance,
a response and a silence proffered.
The past is a dulled refrain,
yet its path has marked us in life,
and we, as a book with each page a story told,
of what made us who we are;
and love, hate, aspirations and rejections live within us
like flags to guide a way,
to understand what we have become,
and what lead us to our conclusions,
our responses to fear and possibility,
in this our miraculous lives.

So very true: “and so pain leads us to perspective,
the sharp edges removed from it,
where reflection whispers thoughts of solace,
and pain becomes a part of us, in flesh and mind.”
And so we become who we are. Great thoughts, Tony, great work.
I’m particularly proud of this one and so pleased you related and enjoyed the thoughts. Thank you Phyllis, for your continuing support.
