Safety of Solitude
With out a word a misty rain,
almost unseen drifts.
without falling between
green bows,
in a morning alone.
I am assured that there
lies my salvation.
For in solitude there is no earthly pain.
no suffering.
that only comes from a fellow man
or a woman’s lips
or their presence without words.
one or the other,
each to be set free.
For in that safety of solitude there is peace.
I have known that since a boy.
and boys will be boys so they say.
girls will be girls too,
just ask them
and they will tell all
and repeat.
But in the safety of solitude away
from all of mankind,
I am free in these forests of mist.
to admire without critic,
or to scream without voice.
to sit silent if by choice,
to ignore the sounds and thoughts
that follow.
The safety of nature asks only one thing,
that we approach slowly
and follow the signs.
that we preserve from even ourselves,
or especially from ourselves.
whichever comes first.
and then leave it
without a trace
of man.

Nice job, Ed. You’ve painted such a peaceful scene away from the problems and troubles of life that’s inherent to we as humans. Thanks for this thoughtful piece.
I really liked this. I am kind of a solitary guy so rang true in my head.
I love this verse, Ed. Ain’t much better than solitude in a place that is peaceful. Very nice.
Lovely smooth flowing verse Ed, penning a truth that I too accept and abide by. Solitude and silence are my friend, because within that I can commune with life unimpeded and preserve my reality in living and expression. Great job my friend.
Hello Ed, absolutely beautiful… I could feel such solace in your flow, a peaceful stream of thought with a quiet, but deep respect for nature. Just lovely. Thank you.
Best,
Mel
Ed, this is why I have to spend as much time out in the pine trees as possible. If I remove myself from this solitude you explain so well I lose focus and touch. I appreciate this poem and I thank you for sharing. Jamie
