Mighty Subway Dragon
The day so sunny and mild,
as I walked down,
into the belly of the beast.
Stopping on the stairs,
to get used to the gloom below.
Upon the platform,
lost in thought,
among a throng of strangers,
until the sound of the dragon –
emerging from the tunnel.
A great sound of rumbling,
lights flashing ,it came.
As the doors opened,
I stepped inside.
Squeezed between
a fat woman and a man.
The man sympathetically smiled,
breathing garlic breath upon me,
while the woman stood on my foot.
We rode each lost in their own thoughts,
a child screaming just for delight,
angry voices exchanging curses
and lovers holding hands and kissing.
It was a delight to emerge –
from the darkness,
as we crossed the Manhattan Bridge.
The sun glittered, like sparkling diamonds ,
upon the ripples of the river below.
The thousands of skyscrapers –
shone in a myriad of rainbow colored windows.
Blinking we went down below once more –
into the darkness the subway charged.
My straphanger mates,
looking as tired as I.
Finally to my great delight –
came my subway stop.
Emerging from below –
sunglasses glinting in the sun.
Tripping the light fantastic,
in a special city type strut,
on the streets of New York City.

I love this, Rasma. It is a delightful read and well penned.
Thank you Phyllis
I’ve always wanted to experience New York City. Thank you for the vivid images above and below. I can only begin to imagine packing on to a subway, but I am sure it is well worth acclimating, to enjoy what seems an amazing city. Well done! 🙂
Best,
Mel
Thank you Melissa. If you visit NYC just don’t take the subway during the morning or the evening rush hours or you’ll think that you’re going to get crushed. Otherwise it is an experience like no other.
A wonderful depiction of what it must be like to ride the subway, Rasma. An interesting journey and very well penned.
Thank you John
Another job well done, Rasma. Thank you for allowing us to experience the city from the comfort of our own home.
Thank you. From the comfort of your own home is the best way to get to know NYC William before you venture to visit since it can be one thrilling and mind-blowing experience
The subway is a thing alright, and perhaps many hundreds of years ago a train could well have been viewed as a huge metal dragon (great simile) and I love that perspective. When we stop and look at what life is these days, much of what we take for granted is odd and strangely accepted. I loved the descriptions and expression here as it emoted the feelings of your journey so well. great work Rasma
Thank you Tony. You know I haven’t been back to NY in so long now I would probably be a bit anxious entering the subway after all this time. Sort of like sudden space-age travel.
