Anxiety Whispers
Anxiety Whispers
Shapeless whispers
heckling
anxiety’s intrusion…
the unwelcome spider
crawling behind.
The mind
self-ridiculing, prodding
with endless chatter…
I’m merely here
in search of some peace…
I beg, no more harm
to speak…
I’ve met my monsters
long ago…
lurking beneath and in-between.
Still it comes
gnawing at my self-esteem…
mean, obscene
where no one knows my war
unseen.
These scathing voices
taunting me…
no reconciliation found
no pill to drown
I plead, please take its leave…
That my mind may simply be…
fluid and free.

So meaningfully done, Mel. I liked the line, “I’m merely here in search of some peace…” My grandchildren are here today -need I say more. All lightheartedness aside, you did a marvelous job with this one.
I enjoy light heartedness William, thank you! Appreciate the kind comment. Enjoy your Grandchildren. 🙂
Best,
Mel
Such a poignant write Mel, of those self-doubts that haunt our minds and souls. And I feel it is a creative mind that fears this most and can come undone. Fear is such a pervasive hindering and all we can do is let it go, and focus on the beauty that lives so eloquently within the creative mind. beautiful work Mel.
Thank you Tony, valuable advice that I am grateful for. Glad you appreciated the piece. 🙂

Mel, I love how you describe anxiety as “an unwelcome spider crawling behind.” My wife suffers from it and I think we all have at some stage. I wrote a poem about depression called “Beware The Black Dog.” Comparing mental conditions to scary creatures helps to describe to others what they are really like for sufferers. Another good poem.
Thank you Ed, I would like to take a look at your poem. I am sorry that your wife may have some understanding, it can be quite debilitating. Having those around that can understand, is so helpful.
Appreciate it!
Best,
Mel
As one who wrestles with anxiety every day I thought your choice of words were very spot on and creatively expressed.
Hello Lori, I am sorry that you know this piece first hand. Thank you for your comment, I appreciate it. Its always helpful to know that others can relate.

They say I “suffer” from anxiety — seems it is just the time to go garden.
“beneath and in between” such a pleasure here.
