Precious World
Precious World

Precious this world for all it is,
gilded with expectations of fortune and favor,
each petal, each leaf and life of root and hoof,
resplendent in their potentials of wealth;
yet what a mind sees paper alone
when glorious life radiates so purely,
and life eye to eye watches intently,
while we decimate, bread and defeat
nature’s own course?
Justification like waterfalls flood a questioning mind,
resources for survival, the enduring of our kind,
cannot placate what we create in depletion
of all that is given so lovingly
within the natural world;
and if life itself is a commodity, what then of life,
what right those who decide it,
to believe one life over another in any world, a vindication.
Life sees life and in recognition respects it,
in every realm, every facet and level of existence,
except for one species, man,
who arrogantly decides to utilise life to suit its own purpose,
justify culling, destruction and draining resources
from a world so out of balance,
it may never return to health or equilibrium,
and one day simple cease to provide,
and end its reign.
Precious life, every cell and organism,
cannot abide this human plight of devastation,
and no change is foreseeable, none enough to matter,
and in the end, we shall die by our own hand,
our own arrogance and self-belief,
when a simple plants has achieved more in evolution
than we sentient beings,
for lack of sharing, respect, love and caring,
in a world that invited an unlimited potential.

Out of all you said, Tony, these lines stood out to me -“Life sees life and in recognition respects it, in every realm, every facet and level of existence, except for one species, man, who arrogantly decides to utilise life to suit its own purpose, . . .” I think that sums up the human race pretty good. Thanks for another interesting write!
Thanks Bill, yes sad isn’t it; we, supposedly with our superior intellect, yet where has it got us? Cheers!
Tony, as I read your poem, and was being impacted by its simple truths, I thought of my son who is right now spending two weeks in Iceland, that beautiful country of waterfalls, glaciers and once upon a time, fish named cod. But the fish are gone due to mismanagement of that resource. And so your second paragraph stands out to me, especially these lines:
and if life itself is a commodity, what then of life,
what right those who decide it,
to believe one life over another in any world, a vindication.
Thank you for the thought provoking poem.
Much appreciated Chris, glad you related and enjoyed my thoughts. Cheers!
Tony you nailed life and the loss of it with your words, “and in the end, we shall die by our own hand,
our own arrogance and self-belief,” yes indeed, life is a precious commodity, but humans swine it away, trade it off for toxic schemes, stuff, sensual pleasures, torture, rape. There is not enough space in this box to add all the words that man has so readily used to his advantage. Every species other than HUMANS respect and replicate and only kill when necessary, mostly for food. Man has never taken or respected lessons from the animal kingdom. They selfishly find only pleasures of their minds and flesh. What’s in it for me, their motto. While the poor, sick and dying beg for mercy at their leaders feet. I’m ashamed to be called human most of the times.
A sad truth, and all we can do is try to be better than all those who take life for granted. Cheers my friend.
Life and Nature is so very special – Nature is where I thrive. Your image up top makes me think of my life, serene, quiet, peaceful. Yet, I am not blind to how far too many humans do not care enough to walk softly upon Mother Earth and respect all Nature has given us so willingly. Your verse is important for all to read, Tony. Touches my heart and soul, it does.
Glad it does, I have always seen nature as our perfect model of how life should be, and humanity has done nothing but destroy in the name of progress. Take care.
