Night Passages

I used to wander into the unknown wonders
of night passages
I haven’t done so now in years
who knows why except for time
and the need for sleep
perhaps tonight I will again
now there is more time
Taking a heavy flannel shirt and silently meandering
only the softest of footsteps
trying hard to blend with the
souls of living night
sharing all the soft sounds of wildlife
this nocturnal peace
In the dark green meadow I can feel
the falling moisture that will in time become
a new mornings dew
the crickets sweet chirp reminds me of time
the hoot of the barred owls
speak in all knowing voices
Passing slowly and ever quietly into the old
gravel road and down the hollow
nearing the silver lined brook I stop
and just listen
what peace is this voice speaking to me
I’m reminded of soft tinkling piano keys
a sonata perhaps
Looking away to the sky the stars become
my guide the moon my friend
a shadow passes across my shoulder
a hawk ignores the man
and moves away in swishing
wing sounds
take me with you my friend
I plead
And now turning near the pasture I spy
dark equine shadows in a field
they stand motionless
ever vigilant
no wonder they’re the best friend of man
I would stand back to back with you
if only you’d allow
one soft shuddering sound from
the nearest
I can almost see the wind lift
softly of her mane
It’s okay ….. I say silently
The horses move towards me slowly
to my right an apple tree grows skirting the fence line
and I reach down for the tempting drops
to offer them as only the youngest approaches
she reaches a new born neck to my hand
timidly taking one
and I think smiling
we are one now
one in night passages

What a brilliant array of passages you took us on Ed. Each presence was a delightful experience. To walk silently in the dark of your homestead must be so uplifting. I can only envy you as I traverse the concrete sidewalks of city life.
Beautiful Ed, a plethora of great phrasing and imagery, so delicate and lightly rendered with an ethereal feel. It flowed so well and warm in reading, the mind wondering in thoughts and images of what you so eloquently speak. very much enjoyed my friend.
ed,
I love picture painting with words, and you painted a beautiful, meaningful, and sensitive picture. Thank you for sharing this one with us. Great job.my friend!
Ed, this is so beautiful and so vivid to the mind that I felt I was there walking along with you. Thank you for the lovely stroll through night passages. Exceptional read – I love it.
