His Name
Tony DeLorger © 2016
Upon the sand, as tide rose slowly to immerse,
she wrote a name, its shattered edges shadows made,
as the gloaming pushed the pale sky away,
and a tear, like an orange diamond reflection
upon her cheek, did glisten.
A broken line horizon, seas in swell,
recants the memory of her pain,
still holding her heart in blame, for letting him leave,
that day the storm roared from south, like a freight train,
to the end of days.
And boats left in determined line,
and all their hearts saw not the signs, just the grey affront,
the sea and they held each other in respectful gaze
to do what they must as was their place,
their fisherman’s oath their sacred grace.
And on return one boat missing,
the churning seas sought to give them rest,
and like a pointed sacrifice, on occasions boats were lost,
in reminder of the power of her will, oft times to test,
the souls of fisherman too close.
So as sun falls to its watery silent sleep,
she writes his name upon the sand,
and watches as the water draws it in, to reap,
all of her hopes now buried deep in sea,
and she bereft, her love the burden of the waves.

A sad but well-written tale of the sea. It provides a livelihood for many but can be also very unforgiving.
That is its nature, and glad you liked the work John. Thanks for your kind words.
Tales of the sea so many. It can be as gentle as a lamb or as angry as a raging bull. Much respect should it be given, for those of us who venture on top of it, soon can find ourselves under it, lest there be respect given to the might of the sea. Nicely penned Tony.
Thanks Vincent, I’ve always had a fear of the sea’s power and I admire those who choose to sail across vast waters. Not for me, but I do have a fascination and profound respect. Cheers!
Tony, this is so sad, but yet so beautiful, the emotion so strong. I haven’t seen all of your writings, but I believe this is my favorite so far. Thanks for a lovely piece.
Thanks Bill, I guess story telling in poetry has another level of connection and glad you enjoyed and related to this one. Cheers!
Tony,
Such a heartfelt beauty of a poem. Sad, yet valiantly mastered. The sea is a force to reckon with, (as are your incredibly profound poems with such deeply embedded wisdom).
Thank you so much Tamara, so pleased you appreciate my work. Take care
