Flames Eternal

The flames, like tongues wagging,
voluminous words of bitter unrest,
barking at night, reaching to black surrender,
in all their vibrant hues of reds and orange,
white hot cores to leaping flares;
and cinders rise up into the night
like swirling trails of fireflies in vortex,
as crackled wood moans in carbon tones,
and charcoaled embers glow.
The glow radiates warmth and softened light,
transfixed those eyes into its heart,
as time in silent flight,
draws each thought into dark embrace,
night cloaked in void, fire held in opposition,
consumes, ensues with tenacious will,
and the roar of flame echoes into silence,
its countenance both feared and adored,
as flames steal thoughts and worries away, restores.
And each night, each fire a single expression,
unlike any other, the flames in stories told,
their life brought to bear, doused then resurrected,
never dies, and in time like revenants
they hold the world in memory
of all that lives and dies,
yet lives on in life’s consuming,
and we witness the power, their potential,
and in the warmth of their trusted embrace,
we choose their light.
