Nonetheless At Any Rate Anyway

Nonetheless.

I’m refusing right now

to be old.

Although I know

that’s probably impossible…

I’m still trying.

Nonetheless.

Well, I guess, it’s a memory

of you and I

somewhere by the fax machine,

the place where we met.

And you were kind of dismissive

and all I said was

“Hi. My name’s Nate.”

But strange, at any rate,

how after that

you were always asking me

if I wanted to go

out on the town

or to a party at your house

or to a party at a friend’s.

At any rate,

I told you I love you,

you said you adored me

and I said you were always

sweet to me.

Sweet to me

like strawberries,

some kind of tang

like lime,

a bit of a refreshing beverage

that we drank in the summertime.

Anyway,

that’s why I refuse

to get old right now.

Nonetheless, Man, Woman

I've been writing poetry since I was a teenager, which was back in the early 1980s. I've studied poetry a bit, have learned form, meter, alliteration, things like that; but mostly I just let it flow. Though academics tend to think rhyme is contrived, and it often is, I still use it. I think poetry is rhythm and sound. If it sounds good when you read it out loud, then it's good poetry. I think I admire E. E. Cummings the most out of the great poets; because of his totally unorthodox approach. For substance, I like Walt Whitman. For rhythm, I like Edgar Allan Poe. For the raw stuff, I like Ginsberg. I also like a little Dylan Thomas. As for my own writing, I like to explore deeper feelings but feelings that have broad meaning too. Hope to share some of that meaningful writing here.

We can’t avoid the ageing process, however we can forever be young, by acting and thinking the part. The old saying, “your as old as you feel” well some days I feel old, but most days, I’m in fine spirits ready to take on any adventure. Also its nice to have memories stored in the old gray matter, so from time to time we can open one of it’s many drawers and let loose pleasant ones to brighten out day and quicken our step. So stay young at heart always my friend, smile instead of a frown and fight the good fight until the bitter end. Heck we all know the grim reaper is always nearby. Nicely worded my poet, thanks for the share.

Thanks, Vincent, and you’re definitely right about that. It’s all about what we are in our heart.

I am refusing to look age in the eye. I enjoy your longer free verse. You tackle the complexity of life in a simple and enlightening manner. Jamie
