No Longer Satisfied

When you are no longer satisfied with the material things that obscene wealth brings and all the parties every night are merely moments passing like ships in the night.  You are empty inside; your soul and your heart yearn for love.  Which will you choose?

Opulence rests at hand

Endless beaches, pristine sand

Splendor found in every port

Every club and each resort

All for you if you have money

Own the land of milk and honey

Lavish art adorns the walls

Exquisite statues line the halls

Rarest woods and polished stone

The centerpiece a mighty throne

Indulge in every comfort found

Master every sight and sound

Basking in extravagance galore

You have it all but you want more

Funding of an entourage

They provide your camouflage

Slip from place to place unseen

Bursting forth, you make a scene

Fortune and fame good company

Yet outsiders call it misery

On vacation, your daily grind

Fancy foods, designer wine

Silver, jewels, platinum, and gold

Empowering you to act so bold

Yet underneath you seem to sigh

Unhappiness hides within your eyes

Your heart, it starves for new

A place, a world, where you are you

You’d gladly trade the wealth and fame

To rest each night and feel no shame

For a hand to hold, earned by love

That peace inside, your sacred dove

Can you cast off the beast of affluence

Your swanky pompous decadence

And gravitate to what makes you whole

Starve your cravings but feed your soul

Opulence, perhaps in love..

Our souls survive when found in pairs

Take a chance…I’ll meet you there

I write about everything and sometimes nothing at all. I'm fascinated by old things, rusty things, abandoned places, or anywhere that a secret might be unearthed. I'm passionate about history and many of my pieces are anchored in one concept of time or another. I've always been a writer, dating back to my youth, but the last decade has been a time of growth for me. I'm continually pushing the limitations of vocabulary, syntax, and descriptive phrasing.

This is a delight to read RJ. Your rhyme scheme is superb and flows easily, but most of all I love the message.

This is indeed a great poem and I think most of us are of like minds here atleast on some matters.

I would choose true LOVE any time over the love of money or material gain. Remembering that we can’t take material wealth to the grave, however LOVE dwells with us forevermore and our spirits will soar through eternity, if we choose to LOVE here on this plane. I enjoyed reading this fine piece, your message was a welcome.

Great poetry RJ. Something we can all relate to and think we would make the right choice yet not everyone will and many of us have to mature to know the difference!
“Starve your cravings to feed your soul” Love that line!
I look forward to reading more of your work. Great style and flow.

This is one of my favorite poems on here so far! I have often thought of these very same things concerning wealth and the seemingly superficiality of it all, as compared to the much more durable riches in life, such as you mentioned, our souls, as well as the joys of simplicity. The riches of this world are not really the fulfillment in which we seek, and never will be.
