Sand Dunes of Yesterday
Sand Dunes of Yesterday
It seems not so long ago when we stood
Upon the sand dunes of yesterday,
And gazed out to the ocean,
Hands clasped just as our hearts were,
Woven together with dreams and hopes
For our life together as we love forever,
Promises made were in those dreams
And we had so much to look forward to.
The sand dunes were our favorite place
To dream, picnic, read poems to each other,
And lay in the aftermath of love,
To repose in the tranquil moments
Of bliss and the warmth of bodies
So comforting and peaceful,
Listening to the waves and seagulls,
As we drifted on waves of love.
Each time we visited our haven,
The sands had shifted to change
Our little hill slightly,
Just as the sands of time shifted
Our love, little by little,
Till we no longer visited the
Sand dunes we once loved so much,
And our love began to fade.
Life got in the way of our dreams,
And as sands will shift in the winds,
So our love drifted away
Till we forgot our promises and dreams,
We no longer had time to spend a day
Away from everything, just for us,
Loving and playing on the sands
Were no longer part of our life.
I stood alone on the sand dunes today,
Gazing out to the sea,
Watching our life, our love drifting away,
Wondering where we went wrong,
Are other interests more important than our love?
I visit our haven every week,
Wondering, hoping you will come back,
But the sands have shifted far too much.

I loved the way you compared love to the shifting sand dunes, Phyllis. Unfortunately, it seems this happens much too often as lovers who once shred so much drift apart. Good work.
Thank you, John. Your reading and comment is much appreciated. Take care.
Phyllis , Very true . This life , this love ……..Lately I’m thinking that much of our life experiences are that way , the kids grow and are gone , family once closer drifts away into their own little circles , Just keep this in mind my friend , our friends are never far from the dunes , even when you think you’re alone there ……boom , a friend is smiling at your presence ! Very nice visions !
Thank you, Ed. Yep, lot of changes in life, in the sands of time. You are right, friends are never far from the dunes. Glad you enjoyed the poem. Take care, my friend.
It seems that Mr. Hansen has stolen my very thoughts of this wonderful piece…. lovely piece Phyllis
Thank you very much, Kurt. I appreciate it.
A heart-warming and evocative piece, sad but that is the nature of life and love, like so many things can fade like the setting sun. Great work Phyllis. (by the way ‘comforting’)
Thank you, Tony. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for catching the typo, too.
