Lessons in Gratitude
Lessons in Gratitude
I
Syllables of gratitude
counted in strategic place
inventory lined on shelves
collected daily.
To feel steam of a hot bath
before angular sunrise
find relaxation this way
path to a coffee.
Before day plans overwhelm
drink coffee and think of rhyme
contemplate my gratitude
of peaceful silences.
Today to live a poem
that soothes the soul while living
banish thoughts of yesterday
start again empty.
Blessed by these humble poets
pages of bird song and tea
tears of gratitude will start
to collect a pool.
Another day of labor
grateful for a daily wage
made light from early rhythm
found in morning song.
II
Find gratitude in prayer
a quiet meditation
to consider all the light
needed in a day.
A thanks to all the music
whose melody provides path
along the plan of a day
an orchestration.
Grateful I have bread to share
the ability to love
an unmeasurable care
light of compassion.
The blessing of souls who help
a peaceful and thankful home
happy and healthy children
know a deeper love.
Greet each hour with gratitude
so much today has to give
open my arms for each gift
praise today’s wonder.
Exercise a thankful heart
share as bucket overfills
each joy with those who have naught
so they may find love.
III
Thankful for tranquil winter
for the quiet of each star
the miracle of twilights
opening ripple.
This miracle gratitude
medicine to calm the heart
prescription for better times
promise of peace.
To count syllables daily
tap my fingers as if beat
inventory gratitude
before the sunrise.
Thankful for this grit to go
understanding life’s needs
knowing when to be present
a firm foundation.
An ability to list
create and follow a path
avoid daily temptation
to pick the flowers.
Grateful for those who read this
join in celebration
worship as song and a dance
found within our thanks.
