A Return to Antelope Valley (2023)
A Return to Antelope Valley
(2023)
1
Look up to me from my side
as I create songs for you
deny the words to strangers
you begin to smile
Your being their silently
learning every motion
curious every day
rarest of treasures
A return to my valley
a place we once called home
American Buffalo
time to tell the truth
Share from ocean to ocean
all of your mighty rivers
the songbirds and the eagle
respect your story
A return to Antelope
Valley where I left myself
your story still dips
a resurrection
Raw untouched ecosystem
of Rattlesnake and Sagebrush
a vast spirit now open
this America
2
The old world brought all their weeds
they brought the Dock and Burdock
Plaintan and Mallow for marsh
Mayweed and Nettle
Pestilent Common Thistle
with famous Dandelion
these foreigners everywhere
most species have left
To destroy all noxious weeds
fill contract to kill common
yet not one species perish
unlike Buffalo
Our neighbors are Thornthistle
delicate bloom agony
blessing of delightful sweets
past the sour Briar
Isolated monument
this silent clump of pine trees
once owned only by wildlife
of past deep forest
Bark only used by deer
tenants of wilderness
bound by the tether of man
strangers on their land
3
Light shines on old forest trees
with a different conviction than young
a dismissive reflection
though old canopy
This new world brought waterfalls
crests of unending glory
expression of power pure
sweet electricity
Caves near boiling water pools
fancies of our intellect
wonder at magnificience
of Horse-shoebend Falls
Hostile influencer of land
America turns over
onto its clear cut belly
these men and nature
Predators will catch their prey
a piece for ecology
they do not wipe out Gazelle
all for just one meal
American Eco-Verse
we can rebuild a balance
livable environment
a beautiful world
