The Good Old Days – Christmas Vacation
I remember the falling snow
Building snowmen in the yard
Trudging up the biggest hill
Sledding down was such a thrill
Two weeks of Christmas vacation
How every day seemed endless
Everyone, lost in the spirit
The season had a reason
It gave new life to the old
And endless joy to the young
The good old days were precious days
Children laughing, making memories
Grandma’s cookies, decorated with love
Sparkling lights on every mantle
And the scent of the Christmas tree
Everyone waiting for Santa Claus
So many gifts piled underneath
Held our breath in anticipation
Clinking glasses when family came
Toasts and stories from another year
Hearts filled with cheer and memories
And then finally came the night before
Christmas Eve, the quiet night
In silence we offered our prayers
Tightly held hands, thankful for one other
Finally, the reading of the Christmas tale
Then off to bed in anticipation
Dreams of so much and everything
And when morning finally came
Contagious laughter and smiles for all
Crumpled paper trampled underfoot
Boxes opened; ribbons undone
And it was peace on earth
If only for a few fleeting hours
Not a thought of anything but kindness
My memory is fading, but some remain
Permanent pictures of the good old days
They happened so fast, it seems so long ago
And then we grew, some of us went away
Christmas cards keep the bonds alive
But they can’t replace the good old days
When everyone gathered on Christmas day
Exchanged our gifts, wishes of well
Hugs and kisses, and the family dinner
Oh, how it seems so long ago
How I miss the good old days…
