Christmas Without One

A

This year a Christmas with one child a far

for the first time one child is not nearby

when winter festivities sneak in sly

soon night sky will be lit by Northern Star.

There are still two others who are festive

we listen to Christmas Classics and sing

a little less joy with one in the wing

yet other guests showing they are restive.

Elias enjoys a good Christmas Rock

Jingle Bell, Jingle Bell variety

and Hannah prefers Mariah Carey.

Our Christmas lights the brightest on the block

without you child I feel anxiety

Christmas Eve when everything is Merry.

Your place at tree will always be waiting

this Hot Chocolate will be kept perfect temp

with these memories, my son, I attempt

to show your presence with my creating.

These Christmas routines will always promise

your smile will be there the following year

such promises hold back a single tear

in this way we will keep Christmas honest.

Early December nights when you are gone

without short talks so far I have no words

except “Merry Christmas” and “I miss you.”

A Santa Claus the kids can depend on

our voices echo Christmas Coral Chords

a missing tenor where you once sang too.

3

Somehow I may be able to share day

early morning Hot Chocolate with new toys

each stocking Candy Canes and other joys

on Christmas we let our love lead the way.

But my chest is tight without you my son

though you will be home soon just not Christmas

I can’t help but notice we are one less

an emptiness that seems to weigh a ton.

With these words one feels a seasonal warmth

to pull upon nostalgia of old names

and place each decoration in its home.

I know Santa will travel from the North

to remember favorite toys and games

and place them under tree though you may roam.
