Get Lost in Your Own Reflection

Get Lost in Your Own Reflection

Seek the mirror that hangs in the hall

Focus on the center and forget the walls

Confidently stare and find your reflection

Is what you see, beyond your complexion?

Adjust your stance, maybe a subtle smile

Find your own perfect pose, if for just a while

Like a picturesque display for the camera lens

But, are you taking selfies or looking within?

Without a thought, try speaking the words

The ones you’ve imagined but never heard

Your lips are moving yet the mirror remains

Does what you say bring you emotional pain?

Your shadowy eyes and their downward cast

Telegraphing those hurtful moments passed

You cannot hide from your own reflection

It’s your true self, not just a projection

Revealing secrets that you’ve kept inside

Has it betrayed you, as you tried to hide?

Troublesome times are about reflection

Overcoming pain and making connections

Getting lost is all about getting found

Revealing your inner self without a sound

It’s facing the truth, whether blunt or cold

Freeing those things that you kept on hold

It comes with anxiety, fear, and trepidation

But often brings about a beautiful creation

When you’re on the edge, maybe have regret

Don’t turn away, you aren’t finished yet

Face those things which keep you down

Gather strength from across the ground

Trust the elements in all you do

Staying the course is your big breakthrough

Writer’s Note

Sometimes we must ‘lose’ ourselves to really discover the things which are holding back our personal growth.  This piece is meant to offer encouragement to anyone who feels they are not reaching their highest and truest good in the world.  It’s one of the many ways to self-analyze and deal with baggage that we are carrying in a constructive way so that whatever the issue, it will no longer be a problem or obstacle to personal growth.

I write about everything and sometimes nothing at all. I'm fascinated by old things, rusty things, abandoned places, or anywhere that a secret might be unearthed. I'm passionate about history and many of my pieces are anchored in one concept of time or another. I've always been a writer, dating back to my youth, but the last decade has been a time of growth for me. I'm continually pushing the limitations of vocabulary, syntax, and descriptive phrasing.

So thought-provoking and inspirational. I needed to read this poem – I have been so down with the loss of my sister and other family issues and kind of lost faith in myself. Thank you, Ralph.
