Dining At The J.T.
Dining At The J.T.
I. J.T. Basque Family Dining
Every Thursday locals will gather
many generations of this small town
at bar with hopes their daily troubles drown
or dine in back no matter the weather.
Old picture paintings of a Basque lifestyle
an offering to Cowboys roaming through
a collection of hats on the wall grew
all gathered to display each working mile.
One hundred years of happy reunions
or nights when family is here to dine
at tables set out for the gatherings.
Our town is small under no delusions
our truth lies deep within this endless wine
remembering our meals before partings.
II. My Family At The J.T.
This family tradition Basque lifestyle
where food and wine is passed as free as air
where everyone can speak about what’s fair
or hang at bar with friends after a mile.
Within this frame my family would sit
my Brother’s Birthday with his newlywed
so drunk on wine he hardly knew what’s said
their faces falling into their Brisket.
This place it understands these strong desires
it reaches out a friendly hand to ask,
I heard rumor that you were a “poet.”
The joy of recognition candle fires
where making Father laugh became my task
while pouring from our flask some more Moet.
III. As The Center Of The Town
Here setting out to write about this time
or all the time in J.T. history
always a chance a reunion will be
a message mixed within this misplaced rhyme.
We were the youth from pasture land dirt roads
who used to drive our pick-up trucks too fast
and never thought our memories would last
or drinking whiskey while we carry loads.
These lifetimes that we turn into stories
of families who gather just to dine
at Basque restaurant, a center of our town.
A friend or two will brag about glories
where everyone is free to share the wine
we tip our host and say “see you around.”
