The Poetry of Daily Walks

The Poetry of Daily Walks
I
I needed to balance my life again
it seems to want to lean on imbalance
my strong emotions take the weaker stance
sometimes I feel I revel in my sin.
A common thread through all my waking years
my desire to see the world on foot
to collect sights and gather up input
understand life before caught unawares.
So many of my poems are of walks
these two interests that keep me well grounded
small feet on earth my loosened cap in clouds.
My duality has a chance to talk
my thoughts will be properly expounded
before I become lost within the crowds.
II
When young my family traveled quite a bit
instead of staying in bland hotel room
where threat of cockroaches in walls did loom
I would take walks around the block for fit.
Some cities full of character open
early for those who wish to drink coffee,
expresso shot my barista agree,
hold fresh baked bread from next door with amen.
I’ve found some cities lack character
with franchised drug stores of no interest
around the litter homeless make their bed.
Just grey where one feels like a prisoner
no community parks where we feel blessed
these differences in lifestyle go unsaid.
III
The poetry of my daily walking
lies down in sole of foot that walks long miles
a constant source of peace through all my trials
this simple act to fill what seems lacking.
I started walking when I was alone
as infant I could not stand to be still
each moment without movement fight of will
my mother worried when from coop I’d flown.
The many secrets in our world hidden
on country roads when slowly walking upon
a brilliant flower on the side of the road.
On covered path I find a rabbits glen
the cicada sing while mother tends her faun
I stop to ponder dragonflies and toad.

I love this enjoyable read, Jamie. I like to be out walking – it really helps to pull all my thoughts in and contemplate on them. Well done with phrasing and style.
Thank you Phyllis. Jamie
I love my time in the mountains, most times I go alone to Rocky Mountain National Park. It revives me and helps with my creative spark. Loved this piece Jamie.
