Family Game Night

Family Game Night
1.)
My time a collection of different games
each game a strategy on how to win
when playing many answers lie within
so many concepts held inside these frames.
A thoughtful day of Trivial Pursuits
to help organize our Scattergories
to put into our play hopeful stories
we contemplate our context and our roots.
Though board games rarely last throughout the night
unlike the time or two we played at Risk
when pieces on the board imitate Life.
To play Monopoly till morning light
begins to melt the dew yet we feel brisk
the culprit “Colonel Mustard with the knife.”
2.)
In every drawer I find some cards or dice
from our Yahtzee or lost from our Uno
to think about while son plays Stratego,
without the dice can we entrap the mice?
An early surgeon starts Operation
a buzzer brings a crash cart to the room
to a poor boy in his hotel of gloom
a game to win our one aspiration.
A chance to use our Cranium at home
to prove us Smarter Than A 5th Grader
with smiles and laugh admit that we were wrong.
Imagine where the Hungry Hippos roam
we choose to be a rider or trader
while we are role-playing we belt out song.
3.)
My daughter decides route with family
on path in Life, we play on our table,
my son chooses a studious fable,
my oldest son decides to cheat slyly.
We spend our time un-scrabbling our word
we learn through games how to communicate
we count how many burgers the pig ate
its belly bursting our own reward.
These poets changing the world with their rhyme
when I was playing games trying to win
a round or two with competitive kids.
My family found a way to use time
I look at cards and peer around with grin
I say “Go Fish or spend your time on skids.”

How well I remember ‘family game night’ when we all sat around the table. Monopoly was our favorite game. Thank you, Jamie, for bringing back some nostalgic memories in your well-penned verse.
