The Diversity of Ground Cover

The Diversity of Ground Cover
I.
Struggle for my lawn
effort for foreign species
Kentucky Bluegrass
Crabgrass and random clover
my job to keep you watered.
You are foreigners
immigrants from other lands
settled for my cause
this European clover
Middle East ground cover.
My efforts are yours
I will struggle for your life
this battle is ours
to fight back the brown from heat
sharing life-giving water.
As long as you’re green
no fear of occasional
placement of our feet
come join our community
give yourself to my lush plot.
Here Periwinkle
over there Creeping Myrtle
all our family
this shiny leaves slow blossom
into blue stars of summer.
II.
Some purple berries
do not eat Oregon Grapes,
mountain evergreen
this creeping Mahonias
with fragrant yellow flowers.
Along the Rockrose
we all enjoy summer snow
each one a transplant
no such thing as local seed
among the carpet of white.
Preach community
through horns of honeysuckle
hidden Creeping Thyme
possibly from Sicily
from along the Italian shore.
This diversity
is what makes my lawn succeed
mix the sweet Woodruff
with some rough desert Crabgrass
side by side in nature’s peace.
Too dry for the moss
move further and further in shade
you may find a patch
at the feet of my yards trees
crawling along some siding.
III.
Each species special
we celebrate lineage
pride in collection
my lawns different points of view
enjoyed from evening Winecup.
Hibiscus alone
or straight Kentucky Bluegrass
will never compare
to healthy mixture of all
in their own special plots.
A combined beauty
Jenny, Myrtle, and Stonecrop
over a large swath
of my small amount of land
lush responsibility.
My perennial
ground cover by my design
with little planning
can make the world get along
strong as we grow together.
Such slightly different colors
reflect in early sunlight
and bath the viewer
a few seconds of pleasure
moments of diversity.

I love ground covers – Creeping Thyme and Rockrose my favorites. Again, with your excellent imagery, you have taken me along on your travels. These verses take me to beauty and a lovely walk. Nice work, Jamie.
Thank you Phyllis. Jamie
