We Gather Around the Turkey: Light Verse for Thanksgiving
We Gather Around the Turkey
Light Verse to Celebrate Thanksgiving
The first of the holiday trio is over and Turkey Day is almost upon us. This Holiday brings memories of perfect meals and moments with family that stay forever. Please enjoy this collection of light verse, a few found in old torn journals from Holidays past, along with a hearty “Happy Holidays!”
I. The Turkey Feast
Soon the day of the Turkey will be
a collection of friends, family,
we show love with each hug
our home all warm and snug,
a safe haven where the seconds are free.
As we gather around the cooked bird
only rattle of silverware heard
please pass the mash taters
and other such starters
more food then I can eat I’m assured.
II. The Turkey Slouch
Soon with close siblings we will unite,
bring dish after dish to fill the night,
beginning with the cheese,
Oh, pour me some wine please,
just a matter of time till a fight.
With our Uncle Joe asleep on couch
the mix of football and food to slouch
the children are curled up
after an epic sup
not a complaint or a single “ouch.”
III. Time for Family
We are thankful for our family
even though question our sanity
of the amount of food
we consume in this mood
the apple cider makes us silly.
There’s not an open eye in my group
after Pumpkin Pie with ice cream scoop
a thankful day of feast
our belt buckles released
a years left overs for turkey soup.
IV. A Thanksgiving Mood
We have safely made it through the hors d’ouvres
the Turkey is carved and ready to serve
then we pile up our plates,
get through grace posthaste,
to stuff our faces with no reserve.
Now we sit with hands on our bellies
no space left for Cranberry Jellies,
with proper gratitude
a Holiday attitude,
we sink down in front of the Tele.

I love Thanksgiving when the whole family gets together to celebrate, eat, and reminisce. Your poems are nicely penned and nostalgic, Jamie. I enjoyed reading them. Well done.
Thank you Phyllis. I am thankful that I have found this group where I am allowed to be myself and share my joys. Your friend Jamie.
Very nicely done about my favorite holiday of the year. This piece brought back numerous memories for me. Thank you for that Jamie.
Nice Turkey poetry. I for one love Thankagiving, especially all the specialty desserts everyone brings to my house. The only thing I hate is how crazy the wife gets in the days before, with cleaning and prepping, it makes her a little batty. Lol. Nice work Jamie.
Thank you Kurt and Paul for your kind comments and I hope you have a great Turkey Day! Jamie
What wonderful poetry to celebrate Thanksgiving with, Jamie. It makes me jealous that we don’t celebrate that holiday here…oh well, bring on Christmas dinner.
