The Need For A Family Vacation

To hear the song of bird taking flight…

The Need For A Family Vacation

I. Family Vacation

When my family needs a vacation

away from my daily vocation

put a finger on map

give the ole mule a slap

maybe a long trip to the ocean.

Without time or money to escape

just pretend there’s a change of landscape.

When you cannot leave home

imaginations roam

making juice out of sour grape.

When you cannot afford to travel,

when all attempts seem to unravel,

take time to imagine

a castle or dungeon

or pretend our gardens a marvel.

Sometimes we are Pirates in our yard

a search for treasures with dog as guard

where an x marks the spot

in our neighborhood plot

pretending swashbuckling is hard.

Other times we make it to garage

to work on a masterful collage,

each child has an easel,

ones drawing a weasel,

the other a colorful montage.

Or maybe to build an epic fort

to tackle sheet fort building as sport,

to crawl through passages

to get to the dishes,

play in children’s exclusive resort.

Dancing and spin around like Snow White

hearing the song of bird taking flight

through the trash at the dump

or at local gas pump

trying to see the world in different light.

There are people who cannot daydream

there lives seem to be somewhat extreme,

from way up in the clouds

forget boring crowds,

“What toppings to put on my ice cream?”

Great post, Jamie. It is wonderful to use the imagination to set the spirit free and roam to magical places. Children are so creative with imagination and it is fun and beneficial to mental/emotional health to go with them through the imagination. A fun read.

Some of my favorite trips are the ones that only happened in my head. Phyllis is right it is such a help to my mental health to conquer the make believe battlefield with my kids once in a while. Nice one Jamie.

Thank you Phyllis and Paul for stopping by to read my poem. I learn something new everyday from my family. Family is an amazing thing. Jamie
