The Burden I Must Carry

The Burden I Must Carry
The Burden I Must Carry

Festive my morning hopes,
forged coloured scope,
for day to meld with heartfelt
expectation,
and I rise wide-eyed, without
shadows interjection,
to bath my soul in promises
of betterment’s selection,
but the mirror lies,
the sorrow seeps
from subcutaneous levels,
to greet my hopes
with outright rejection,
the truth of it like a dull blade
inserted deep.

Like brooding clouds,
truths linger, avowed,
to taint this desperate wanted change,
but the world in stark countenance,
stares back knowing,
my wants are hardly showing,
amid the pool of melted shrouds,
my pretence weighted
by a world turning,
not discerning my will,
just a backdrop distilled
to pure darkness,
and I so meagre in my sharpness,
alas so small
in hatred’s charade.

Yet each day I face the mirror,
seeking that glimmer of love’s intent,
surrounded by sullied life,
broken people and darkness sent
to turn a world so vulnerable,
so corrupted but circumspect,
trying to be what it is not,
just to placate souls like me,
trying to abide the liberty
of freedom, of love’s possibility,
and a future beyond death,
a spirit held in hopes of ascension,
not the dark sorrow of realisation
that eats away at my soul,
strangles my breath.

Hope is my mantle,
my protection from abyss,
yet even it is remiss
to know the extent of hatred,
the sorrow of lost souls
lingering in wait,
for an ending, a cleansing to sate,
for the world has strayed too far,
and I, isolated, surrounded,
feel a fated coming,
a change so radical
I cannot assume to know,
but hope is all that’s left,
my souls bereft of any solution,
to this burden I must carry.

I also feel a radical change ahead and it is an uncomfortable feeling. Yet, I live one day at a time with the loves that keep me at peace within. Such an emotionally charged piece, Tony, and so well penned. Your skill with phrasing imparts the deep feelings you have with this burden. Well done, dear friend. May peace lighten that burden. Take care.
