Fear is a Burden We Do Not Have to Carry

We fashion our darkest ills,
fear the hooded highwayman
accosting all our dreams,
and we buckle under weight of panic,
then, stone by stone create,
the cells of our captivity.
Our fears are self-propagating,
feeding on all our doubts,
our nightmares and the losses we cannot bear,
yet bring them to fruition,
in our rendering of a life of such despair,
our maudlin state the dismissing of our care.
Fear is an illness of vast scope,
every spark of life we have
so easily evoked to succumb to its plight,
and as we are surrounded,
as the light fades and emptiness envelopes our minds,
we let go of reality, in a web of evil design.
Yet fear is so often unfounded,
so often unconnected to our life,
yet our minds hold onto it,
as if we are drowning, as if it has no bite,
and falsely believing it may save us,
but it is the weight that holds us down, to smite.
Fear is but a recognition of potential danger,
an innate reflex for flee or fight,
but often it is the driving force alone
that leads us to circumstances,
that need not exist at all, or are even right,
for they feed the imagination without sight.
What emotion dictates our lives so menacingly
if not fear, its intensity so alarming, its voice so clear,
yet without it life is so much easier,
and in control our awareness in gear,
attests just a challenge and nothing more,
as clarity reappears.
We can be slaves to our own thoughts,
and when they are limiting,
it is our thoughts that require change and more,
a perspective shift, to release us from ourselves,
to allow calm and considered dialogue
to replace the panic felt.

So often in life fear has held us back from discovering and growing. Once fear is relinquished, a path is opened for us. Excellent message and well penned epistle, Tony. Take care.
Glad you appreciated the work Phyllis, yes fear is our greatest adversary, our most fearsome opposition to growth. Without it we flourish. Take care.
Fear is often a paralyzing overwhelming problem for many. I have had many a fear in my day, from a young boy, living under the hand of an abuser to my dear mother, as a witness to fear, it gave me much respect for it. Although I’ve enjoyed certain kinds of fears, like scary movies, dark places, certain species of animals and heights. Without them, I don’t think us humans would have the Adrenalin rush it offers and we need to control it. As I’ve aged through this life, I find my fears have lessened. Very likely its due to our souls find rest, but I must admit I do still enjoy a good scare now and then Tony. Excellent piece here, but it didn’t scare me, lol Cheers!
Thanks Vincent, that’s true, life is about experience and fear is just one that if left rampant can inhibit life and create both pain and isolation. Glad you enjoyed it my friend. Cheers!
