Those Were the Days…Summer Youth

Those Were the Days...Summer Youth
Those Were the Days…Summer Youth

When grass smelt like grass,
face down in it, the scent
undeniably rich and ever green,
of which mother did attest,
as youth wrestled in its burgeoning,
its fractious angst and growling
growing pains of note,
for each battle,
each foe was of mystical form,
like dragon wings and claws
in monstrous scope.

Clothes rarely survived,
vibrant green a color not prescribed,
and buttons never matched,
always lost, torn from rampages
and victories gleaned;
in our patchwork clothes we posed,
sometimes Kings, other times
riding horses into battle zones,
or saber-toothed we prey
on neighborhood dogs
or cats alone.

Come lunch, dishevelled we would be,
a huff from mum, a sandwich and a tea,
and hardly a breath between,
as to the afternoon as soldiers, we strode,
helmets and rifles in our greens,
into the bush and trees,
where ambush was the dream;
and bullets flew like lasers,
lines of light to enemy hearts,
and victory was all there was,
until the sun did start its gloaming fade.

Bath so hot, an indignant mum insists,
brown water, watch is go
swirling down the drain,
and fresh for dinner, time to recoup from battle,
ravenously hungry, a vocal refrain,
downed too quickly but no restraint,
after all the sweat and blood,
then homework done its my favorite show,
and off to bed, to glow
in the aftermath of victory’s knell,
another day of summer.

Sleep that night, so sound and still,
war can be exhausting,
and a young boys heart fulfilled,
what more could a young lad want,
than a friend to stand for right,
to fight the fight and save the world at cost,
heroes in their dreams,
and mates all that seemed to matter,
when life was played out,
devout in its rendering,
imagination a source to recommend.

Oh, such busy days courageous young warriors had in their youth. And all the places you traveled to, always the victor. A delightful, pleasurable read, Tony. Well done, brave warrior, well done.

Thanks Phyllis, childhood is a wonderful time and in memory a simpler time when imagination flourished. Cheers!
