The Elements and Their Effects

The Elements and Their Effects
The Elements and Their Effects

In temperance of our nature,
the four elements work within us,
nature spirits in constant rivalry
for balance of our expressions,
trying to find equality
as we move both physically
and emotionally,
through time and our reality.

As the seasons,
Earth-Autumn, Air-Spring,
Fire-Summer and Water-Winter
bare our expression and propensities,
in colors, in feelings, in shapes
and in emotions,
Earth and Air, Fire and Water
balance each other to equilibrium.

The negative attribute of too much earth
can be ‘obstinacy’ and ‘grumpiness’,
thus needing the balance of air,
attributes like ‘spontaneity’ and ‘inspiration’,
and when introduced in activity,
the balance is attained
and the negative traits fade away
as joy supersedes them.

When fire is out of balance and
its negative attributes like ‘anger’ and ‘aggression’
are in play, water’s attributes of ‘creativity’
‘expression’ and ‘calmness’ help to balance,
as do colors help to calm,
like grays, blues and greens
rather than the bright vibrant colors
of fire/summer,

Music also can help imbalance:
woody guitars and strings (water)
rather than the metallic sounds
of brass instruments of (fire),
the flutes and pipes of (air)
help to balance (earth) instruments
like gongs and percussion,
so that equilibrium is achieved.

When next you feel out of balance,
consider these elemental aspects
and begin to understand the effects they have on us,
as well as how we utilize them
in our moment to moment behaviour,
our emotions and physical responses
to living and the challenges
placed before us.

Very interesting information here, Tony. I have not related the elements to seasons and music before, so I appreciate this piece very much. I am water (December) and always played wood instruments, but did not realize that balance till now Thank you for sharing this well-written piece.

Yes, a fascinating subject, which has been somewhat skimmed over here, for the sake of the piece. Being a conglomeration of these elements, we both respond to them and express them as to our nature. It is a complex and interesting subject of learning, because it reveals just who we are and the various aspects of both personality and inclinations. I am a fire sign but with a major affinity with water, the creator of balance in my life. Water also being the creative aspect of me. An infinite subject of discussion for sure. Glad you are interested Phyllis. Cheers!
