A Temple Pond
A TEMPLE POND…
A long flight of cracked stone steps
partly covered with a thin layer of moss,
leads to a sacred reservoir of myriad beliefs
in the form of a devotees’ much revered temple pond,
where rays of sun weave a shimmering layer
on the surface of placid waters.
How it resembles a green glass mirror
embedded so steadfastly into earth’s surface,
in which the adjacent trees compete to get a glimpse
of their slender and lengthy reflections,
and in which some fallen leaves float rapturously
enjoying their privileged afterlife.
When I place my feet in the crystal waters,
it seems as if every body cell is revitalized,
while an inexplicable soothing wave of coolness
washes over my entire being,
as curious little fishes come up to the surface
to nudge the stranger who invaded their sanctuary.
Nearby, an age old banyan tree stands
its gnarling roots penetrating soil’s unseen depths,
and tremulous leaves seem to chant enlightening words
of wisdom devoured from ancient texts,
as it spreads its unparalleled umbrella of shade
to varied species of birds and animals.
The tears of how many troubled souls
may have merged with the pond’s knowing waters,
and how many may have experienced solace
in the comforting ripples of its gentle embrace,
as a dip in it confers all thoughts cleansed
before seeking the temple deity’s blessings.
