Summer Storm, My Cat’s Dismay

Summer Storm, My Cat's Dismay
Summer Storm, My Cat’s Dismay

The wind tickles my window,
and a momentary shudder follows,
the light now dim as clouds close in
and day turns to night, as swallows
fly far from sight, finding a hollow
to weather the oncoming storm.

Ominously quiet,
no blackbird song today,
and the chill moves in as if to say,
prepare yourself for what’s on the way,
the grumble of nature’s turn of phrase,
can be heard in the distance.

Inside the cat is restless,
looking suspiciously out the window,
the darkness hard to swallow
in the middle of day,
so he turns away,
seeking refuge under table.

By the time that crack lights up the sky,
the cat is hiding within his own fur,
perturbed in his feline sensibilities,
his ability to be lower than the floor itself,
his frightened self betrayed,
fear his cold steel cage.

Then that catastrophic clap of thunder
shakes the window and under table,
that mound of cat recedes a little more,
unable to face the prospect of worlds ending,
and no words of comfort
part him from his catatonic stance.

I ride the storm in safety and comfort,
this summer day long left,
and goose bump chills infuse my will to write,
bereft of sunshine my inner sight
must rise to the occasion,
and pen the stark reality.

Bluster and light,
grumble and plight a passing thing,
just another summer storm in flight,
removing day from life,
and a modicum of rain falls down
to quench the parched ground,
and in the end my cat will be alright.

So vividly described dear Tony of a storm in the middle of summer ..I have always thought that animals are far more sensitive than us to nature’s mood changes.. as if they are sensing something that we are oblivious of.. hope the storm has passed and your Beast is all happy now.. thank you so much for sharing your lovely words..really enjoyed reading…

Glad you did Anjana, and Beast is fine, he hates storms and nestles down in some little nook until it passes. Take care dear friend.
